Lydney Harbour

Lydney Harbour

Visiting Lydney Harbour reveals a very different view of the Severn Estuary. Its 19th century dock shows remnants of the area’s industrial heritage, set against the stunning views of the Severn. Lydney itself is the location of other historical monuments to visit, such as St. Briavels Castle, which dates back to 1209. Later in its history, the town became a strategic port for transporting coal, stone and timber. Surrounded by the lush and natural woodland of the Forest of Dean, there are many ways to explore this scenic landscape. The Forest of Dean District Council area contains more castles than anywhere else in the UK, and its medieval atmosphere is magical. There are plenty of activities for kids, including high-ropes and caving adventures! The Dean Forest Railway gives a chance to relax, and take in the natural landscape. The authentic steam train makes for an exciting trip for the whole family. There are also many walking and cycling paths criss-crossing the forest, and animals such as fallow deer may be spotted hiding amongst the trees.
